Information about the flag
[edit]I will ask the editors on this article if they can to find some information on the flag of Macedonia (Greece). Who designed and enacted the flag and when? I can not find the flag on the website for the perifery Macedonia and Thrace. This flag seems is same as the old flag of the Republic of Macedonia from 1991-1995, just on a blue background. (Toci (talk) 18:29, 25 June 2008 (UTC))
- There is evidence that the Flag of Macedonia was promoted by Kokkonis, a greek business dealing with flags, according to a book published by them (Eleni Kokkonis-Lambropoulos & Katerina Korres-Zografos (1997). Greek flags, arms and insignia (Ελληνικές Σημαίες, Σήματα-Εμβλήματα) (in Greek). E. Kokkonis-G. Tsiveriotis. p. 61. ISBN 960-7795-01-6.). Possibly it was also designed by some member of the Kokkonis family. I don't know of any official approval for this flag.

- I also got another information on the flag here. This flag is same as the flag of Republic of Macedonia designed by Todor Petrov in 1991, but on a blue background. Is there a possibility of a copyright problem with this flag since Todor Petrov flag design is described in details by the law on the flag in the link above and this flag seems is a copy of the older flag design? (Toci (talk) 19:16, 2 July 2008 (UTC))
- The design of the "blue" flag is not a copyright infingement for a number of valid reasons. Definitely there is no copyright problem for inclusion to WP (I believe this is what you really propose), as the "blue" flag does exist in the real world. However any further discussion enters the minefield of political propaganda and is pointless. It is already included with as much NPOV as feasible in article Vergina Sun.
- BTW, the Vergina Sun (as a bagde and heraldic charge) is used by the greek government (See coat of arms and flag of 1st Army: http://www.army.gr/multimedia/emblimata/images/1h_stratia.jpg) and I believe it is registered.

- Speaking of copyright, isn't it impossible for a national flag to be copyrighted? ExOttoyuhr (talk) 20:24, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
- Concepts and ideas are not copyrighted. There is no copyright on "Vergina sun on red field" or "Vergina sun on blue field". The copyright exists for the specific artwork, like the files Image:Flag_of_Greek_Macedonia.png and Image:Flag_of_the_Republic_of_Macedonia_1991-1995.svg and belongs to the respective artists. If a flag is drawn from scratch, there is no copyright violation.
- A copyright violation would exist if an "artist" takes a copyrighted bitmap of the "red" flag from a website and only replaces the field color with blue using a computer program, retaining the old bitmap of the sun (derivative work). This happens sometimes for flags with complicated charges.
- There may be all types of restrictions on the actual use of a flag design, which are not related to copyright.

NOT TRUE! MACEDONIANS ARE NOT GREEK! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.126.166.59 (talk) 00:46, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
Time of adopting
[edit]It is unclear but it is familiar that the flag was adopted in Greece after Republic of Macedonia put the Flag as an official symbol (flag of the country) in 1991. Some sources are saying that the flag in Greece was spread like unofficial symbol after February 1993 (that's about 2 years after Republic of Macedonia got that symbol). So i think that the date should be changed in 1990s or February 1993. I'm new at Wikipedia so i don't know if i will be banned if i change it so i will leave it but i would like to see moderators to change. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Daci92 (talk • contribs) 20:38, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
- The only resource I have in regards to this flag is this, and it says that "The latest flag conflict began in 1991 when Macedonia broke its ties with Yugoslavia and proclaimed and independent republic. As one of Greece's provinces is also called Macedonia, Greece began to contest the new country's right to the name. The Greek protests intensified in 1992 when Macedonia adopted a flag with the Star of Vergina, associated with King Phillip II of Macedon and his son, Alexander III the Great (356-323 BC). Because a similar flag is used in Greek Macedonia, the Greek Prime Minister denounced the flag as a clear provocation". Therefore the source implies that the flag was already in use prior to 1991. I have not been able to find any other reliable sources in regards with that flag.
- You are also confused in regards to the legality of the flag. This flag has no standing on an official level and is completely unofficial. The Vergina Sun on the other hand is an official emblem of the Hellenic Republic and the two have no connection apart from the artistic influence of the Vergina Sun on the flag. --Philly boy92 (talk) 21:00, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
- According to this (updated link June 2016) resource the flag was created to annoy the Macedonians for the changed flag, if the case is like that then the flag is much more newer that we are talking, because the Macedonian Red and Yellow sun flag was adopted in 1995.According to that there was no Vergina Sun blue flag ,the flag was banned from Greece because of the use of Vergina Sun/Star (which Greece registered exclusive rights for using in 1995(about 4 years after the flag was adopted)) in the middle on the red flag.
- According to the text under the pictures on this article on Wikipedia the flag was designated like an official in February 1993 so the particular date late 1980s is wrong in any way.The Vergina sun/star maybe it was used in Greece in the late 80s but there was no flag before the Macedonian one, so it couldn't be late 1980s. --Daci92 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 22:34, 30 May 2011 (UTC).
- May I remind you that a) FOTW is in no way a reliable source and that b) the Greek parliament never approved the Greek Macedonian flag, therefore it is an unofficial emblem. If you can find a source where it says that this flag was approved by the parliament in 1993, please show it to us. The caption on that image is wrong, as the government never approved it, it is an unofficial flag. --Philly boy92 (talk) 10:41, 31 May 2011 (UTC)
